Reverend Ira Culbreath Obituary

Reverend Ira A. Culbreath, 92, of Chappells, South Carolina transitiond from earth to heaven at his home on December 26, 2022. Ira A. Culbreath was born July 16, 1930, in Chappells, South Carolina, the son of William “Will” and Parnell Goudy Culbreath., the youngest of thirteen children. On October 19, 1956, Ira married Edith Hill and through their union they were blessed with five daughters, Rita Joyce (deceased), LaSheila Wylie of the home, Irs Marie (deceased), Sherris Morgan of Greenwood, South Carolina and Keisha Culbreath of Greenwood, South Carolina. Two great grands preceded in death.

 

Ira is survived by one brother-in-law, Hillard Littlejohn of Gaffney, SC; seven grandchildren, Klarissa Wylie, Zanipha Dickerson, Zoe’Lia Culbreath, Khadijah Culbreath, Ira Morgan, Keleigh Outen, and Zernae Culbreath; eleven great-grands, three great-great grands; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends to rejoice in his transformation.

 

On August 21, 1947, he enlisted in the US Navy at the age of seventeen. His career lasted 24 years, in which he served and fought in the Korean War and Vietnam War. In 1971 at retirement, Ira A. Culbreath grade ranking was BMC E-7 (Chief Boatswain’s Mate, Yard Craft Boat Captain). During his Navy Career, he was awarded the National Defense Services Medal, Navy Occupational Service Medal with Asia, Navy Commendation Medal China, Service Medal Good Conduct, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Combat Action Ribbon, and Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces MUC (Gallantry Cross).

 

After retirement, Ira served on the city of Columbia Police Department for 6 years, became an Associate Minister at Forest Drive Baptist Church, a pastor at Rehoboth Baptist Church, a Volunteer Associate Chaplain of Lexington Medical Center, Wach 57 News, and Action Labor.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 7, 2023, at Pine Pleasant Baptist Church, Conducted by Rev. Willie Cannady. There will be no public viewing. Online condolences may be sent to robson@nctv.com. Arrangements are being handled by Robinson & Son Mortuary, Inc.
