Mary Sibert Gilchrist Obituary

Greenwood, SC- Mary Elizabeth Sibert Gilchrist, widow of Robert T. Gilchrist and affectionately known to everyone as “Granny” departed this walk of life on Monday, April 14, 2025, at her home.  Born in McCormick, she was the daughter of the late Willie Bill Sibert and the late Jessie Bell Perrin Sibert.  She was part of Black History because she worked as a machine operator at the Harrison Sawmill Plant in Bradley, South Carolina where she was the first black female to work there and trained most of the white employees and as a cook at the Truck Stop in McCormick, South Carolina. She was also part of the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960’s & 1970’s.

She was preceded in death by one son, Robert T. Gilchrist, Jr., one daughter, Phillistine Gilchrist, two brothers, Thomas Lee Sibert and Charles Edward and two sisters, Susie Mae Milton and Pauline Heath.

She leaves to cherish her memories, six sons, Roy O. Gilchrist of Augusta, GA, Sherman (Jeanette) Gilchrist of Columbia, SC, Danny Gilchrist of McCormick, SC, Victor D. Gilchrist of Peachtree Corners, Ga, Dennis J. Gilchrist of Greenwood and Kenneth (Evelyn) Gilchrist of Mobile, AL; three daughters, Lucille Gilchrist of Johnston, SC, Kathryn Gilchrist of Greenwood, Melisa (Carlos) Lewis of Savannah, GA; a special granddaughter and caregiver, with whom she resided with, Shelethia Gilchrist and her grandson, Kori Marshall; one brother, James (Janice) Sibert of McCormick, SC; four sisters, Betty Musier and Lula Bell Collins, both of McCormick, SC, Shirley Callaham of Plum Branch and Nellie Ruth (James) Garnett of Greenwood, SC; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren of five generations, other relatives and friends to mourn her passing.

Services will be 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at Shiloh A.M.E. Church, conducted by Rev. Paul Wharton. Viewing will be from 1-6 P.M. on Friday, April 18, 2025, at Robinson & Son Mortuary, Inc. Online condolences may be sent to robson@nctv.com.
