Mary Harrison Williams Obituary

Mary Jane Harrison Williams was born on July 30, 1950 in Greenwood, SC. She was the fifth child of nine children born to the late Gentle H. Harrison Jr and the late Eddie Mae Gilliam Harrison. She was preceded in death by a sister Willie Bell Watts, a brother Gentle Harrison III and a grandchild Tariq Jenkins.


Mary graduated from Brewer High School in 1969 and continued her education at Voorhees College, where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Organizational Management. She also received a Master of Art Degree in Human Resources Management from Webster University, and she was a licensed Social Worker for South Carolina. Mary was a loyal and devoted employee of GLEAMNS Human Resources Head Start Program for 42 years, and served in several positions: most recent as Health Liaison for the ten county service area.


Mary joined Mt. Herman Baptist Church at an early age where she was a member of the Usher Ministry and Choir. She later joined Macedonia Baptist Church and was a past President of the Usher Ministry and active with the Little River Usher Auxiliary. Mary also served as chair of several committees at Macedonia and Vacation Bible School secretary.


Truly committed to helping others, her light shined in civic, social, and community activities. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. – Greenwood (SC) Alumnae Chapter. Mary was also a member of the  Greenwood Business and Professional Women's Organization, where she received the 2002 Career Woman of the Year Award; a dedicated member of FATE (Fighting AIDS Through Education); Greenwood Syphilis Elimination Coalition; Greenwood Healthy Families; Greenwood Health and Safety Council, Coalition of Concerned Organizations (COCO); chairperson of the South Carolina Head Start Health Network; advisory member to the National Head Start Center on Health; and served as the Vice President for the SC Head Start Association.


Mary leaves to cherish her memory, a devoted son, George (Melody) Williams IV, of York, SC; a loving daughter Crystal (Corey) Garner of Simpsonville, SC; grandchildren Alazia Williams, A'Kehri McDaniel, George Williams V, Corey Garner Jr, Cole Garner; four sisters, Betty Mae Harrison and Julia (Harry) Martin of Greenwood, Sadie (Sam) Haley of Ninety Six, Amirah Brenda Harrison of Atlanta, GA; two brothers Hervey Harrison of Greenwood and Jerry (Belinda) Harrison of Asheville, NC. She also leaves numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and longtime friends.

We will truly miss her many caring ways, quiet spirit, and beautiful smile.


Services will be 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at Macedonia Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Deloris Henderson. Burial will follow at  The Evening Star Cemetery. Greenwood (SC) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc will be conducting the Omega Omega Ceremony on Friday, September 27th at 6:30 PM at Robinson & Son Mortuary, Inc.
