Mrs. Lizzie Jerusha Wimes Nash, 100, of 112 Lemon Tree Road, departed this life peacefully in her sleep on Thursday January 11, 2024. Born in Abbeville County, she was the eleventh child of the late Bennie and Lizzie Moragne Wimes. She was the last surviving member of all her siblings.
She worked for 32 years at Greenwood Industries, but she has served many roles and inspired numerous members of her family and community. She was a member of Cross Road Baptist Church where, before her health declined, she served as a Sunday School Teacher, Deaconess, Mother of the Church, member of the Senior Choir and the Missionary. She participated in the Promised Land Community Organization, Little River Baptist Association, The Womens Aid Society #69, The 50 Voice Chorus, and delivered meals for Meals on Wheels. She was always willing to help others, supporting her community in numerous ways when asked. Mrs. Nash has always believed in treating others the way she wanted to be treated. She was a woman of faith and a prayer warrior whose best advice was to “trust in the Lord”.
Mrs. Nash was preceded in death by her beloved husband of over 70 years, Rufus, and their daughter, Hattie “Silk” Welton. She is survived by one daughter, Zelda (James) Nash-Simpson of Woodbridge, VA; five grandchildren: Anthony “Tony” Welton of Alpharetta, GA; Vanorez Welton of Greenwood; Byron Welton of Washington, DC; Alexis (Michael) Simpson Mcgee of New Orleans, LA; and Devin Simpson of Washington, DC; one great-grandchild, Austin K. Welton of Alpharetta, GA; two sons-in-law, and a goddaughter, Melissa Gunter James of Raleigh, NC along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to mourn her passing.
