Brenda Downs Obituary

Brenda Moss Downs, affectionately known as “Bae Bae” to family and friends, passed away at age of 76 peacefully, surrounded by love and family. Born on May 8, 1950, in Greenwood County, South Carolina, Brenda was one of twin daughters born to the late Willie and Thelma Williams Moss. Though her twin sister, Linda Moss, passed away shortly after birth, Brenda carried a spirit full of life, laughter, resilience, and love that would impact generations to come. Brenda was the tenth of thirteen children and was raised in a large, close-knit family rooted in faith, community, and love. She was a proud graduate of Brewer High School, Class of 1968, where she built lifelong friendships and cherished memories. A faithful and dedicated member of Flint Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Brenda served faithfully on the church choir and remained devoted to her faith and church family throughout her life. Brenda served 35 years as a nurse secretary at Self Regional Healthcare before retiring in 2005. She became known for her kindness, warmth, professionalism, and ability to make everyone she encountered feel welcomed and valued. Brenda was united in marriage to the late James E. Downs, who was not only her husband but truly her best friend. Together, they built a life centered around faith, family, laughter, and unconditional love. More than any accomplishment, Brenda’s greatest joy in life was her family. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and glory, and she poured her heart into loving, supporting, and praying for them throughout her life. She was a devoted and loving mother to Stanley B. Moss of Charlotte, North Carolina; Zandra D. Wideman of Greenwood, South Carolina; Wendy L. Wideman of Greenwood, South Carolina; Jodi M. Hentz and her husband, Barry Hentz, of Greenwood, South Carolina; and Jamie W. Downs of Atlanta, Georgia. She was also a proud and loving grandmother to nine grandchildren, her “precious babies”, each of whom brought immeasurable joy to her life. To know Brenda was to know warmth, laughter, honesty, and love. She never met a stranger and was known for her warm and infectious spirit, loving and giving heart, quick wit and comedic timing, and her ability to make everyone feel like family. Whether through a joke, a conversation, a meal, or simply her presence, Brenda had a gift for bringing comfort and joy to those around her. Brenda shared a special bond with her more than 30 nieces and nephews, whom she loved deeply and treated as if they were her own children. Her love extended far beyond bloodlines, and throughout her life she nurtured, supported, and uplifted countless family members, friends, neighbors, and loved ones with generosity, wisdom, laughter, and care. Brenda was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Downs; her parents, Willie and Thelma Moss; her twin sister, Linda Moss; her grandchildren, Maya Moss and Josilyn L. Williams; and her siblings William H. Moss, Turman Palmore and her husband John H. Palmore, Gladys Coleman and her husband James Coleman, Lottie Lou Moss, Willie Moss Sr. and his wife, Madelyn Moss, Eddie Moss and his wife Rebecca Moss, and Susie Mae Moss. She leaves to cherish her memory her siblings, James T. Moss Sr. and his wife, Judy Moss; John Albert Moss and his wife, Donna Moss; Judy Burton and her husband, Barry Burton; and Clarence Moss. She also leaves many beloved first cousins whom she was raised alongside as siblings, including Barbara Covington and Rev. Dr. Barry Hamilton; her loving children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, church family, and countless friends whose lives were forever touched by her love and presence. Flowers may be sent to: Robinson & Son Mortuary: 534 Maxwell Ave. Greenwood, SC 29646 The family will receive friends and loved ones at the home of her “sister-sister”, Judy Burton, located at 1303 McKenzie Road, Ninety-Six, South Carolina. She often reminded her children and loved ones with the words, “A part of me goes along with you.” Though she may no longer walk beside us physically, her love, wisdom, laughter, and spirit will forever go with all who knew and loved her.
